When your bullets collide with enemies they react in different ways depending on the power of the weapon, a small handgun will make them stagger back and fall over but a shotgun at close range will see them thrown to the ground in a bloody mess. The gunplay is phenomenal, feeling realistic with each gun affecting the enemy in different ways, shotguns being devastating at close range but dropping quickly off and SMGs being great bullet hoses, better for mid range and blind fire from cover, that may sound very generic but every weapon feels unique, each packing a punch but some being better than others in certain situations.Įverything down to the way Max holds his guns is very detailed, he can carry a two handed weapon in his left hand whilst firing a one handed gun with his right and holster another, holster both smaller weapons and use the two handed gun or throw it down and dual wiled his two smaller guns. It isn’t all bad for Max however, as he can now stay on the floor and roll around after a dive rather than being forced to get back to his feet.
This may sound like a big annoyance but it aids the game well, letting the player know that Max isn’t the man he used to be. He feels more weighty than in the originals and doesn’t land he dives like he used to, usually just banging into the nearest wall or sliding painfully down the nearest flight of stairs. Max is out of shape, still addicted to painkillers and an alcoholic which doesn’t bode very well for this washed up hero. The environments themselves are smaller and more linear than the original games or any of the GTA series, with only golden gun parts to add a little glam to your killing sprees and clues to deepen the story, but because of this Rockstar have been able to work their magic and fill the levels to the brim with so much detail you wouldn’t expect it to be able to run on last gen consoles. Speaking of Health, the noise rock band who composed the soundtrack, called Health, did a phenomenal job, the tracks get stuck in your head and near the end of the game (no spoilers) there is one that makes you feel God-like, you will know what song I’m talking about if you get the chance to play the game. The previously mentioned filter effects also make an appearance in the gameplay sections but it is only in scripted events or when taking painkillers to restore your health. Graphically the game is beautiful, even on the last gen consoles, with the character models being especially impressive. The filter effects used may be a bit much at first but they grow on you, becoming just part of the experience after a few hours of playing. Unlike with Metal Gear, you will have a tough time if you want to skip these as all the loading for the level is done in the background which makes them nigh-on unskippable, this really detracts from the replay value if all you care about is shooting people, but for those with the patience to sit through these you won’t be disappointed. The majority of the story is told through very cinematic and engrossing cutscenes, although the guys over at Rockstar have spent a bit too much time playing the Metal Gear Solid games, as the cinematics appear often and tend to stick around for a while. The bulk of the game is spent gallivanting through the colourful city of Sao Paulo, working for the rich and influential Branco family with his old friend Passos, a new character to the series, but every few chapters it flips back to Max’s days as a cop in Hoboken, a familiar sight for veterans to the franchise.
Max Payne 3 tells the tale of Max, a retired cop from Hoboken who now works as a body guard in São Paulo, as per usual with the franchise it is riddled with conspiracies, double crossings and a lot of guns. When Rockstar, the creative geniuses behind the Grand Theft Auto series, took over the reins of the Max Payne franchise after a 9 year hiatus since Remedy’s last instalment, I was sceptical to whether or not the game would be as defining as the originals, and a lot of other people were too.
